Perks of the job

Don't get me wrong - I love shooting in my studio. It's my happy place and my commute is literally 10 seconds. I have complete control over my lighting in the studio and all my gear/props/chairs/backdrops are conveniently located and I can grab what I need at any time.

But it does get a little boring. I have things so planned out for every studio shoot I miss the challenge of having to be MacGyver when I shoot on location. I LOVE touring a new space and finding the best light (Rembrandt lighting is my absolute favorite so all I need me is a big window). Matching wardrobe to your home decor is fun. And getting you, my beautiful subjects, to relax is a piece of cake since you're already 'at home,' shoes off.

When preparing to shoot outside the studio, I like the act of putting together my kit - thinking of all the possible scenarios I may run into (with light, lens selection, weather considerations, etc...) But what sucks the most is schlepping my equipment around (I sweat easily). Don't love that part, but totally worth it.

Behind the Scenes

Here's some behind the scenes of a recent in-home Lifestyle shoot I did for some of my favorite clients, the Bringewatt family, of Blair. Val is from Brazil and their house reflects her colorful personality. Per usual, we started with a FaceTime home tour and chatted about her hopes and dreams for this session. Julia is about to turn 16 and they wanted to document this moment in their lives - including their 3 pets, Katie (dog), Bertram (their new kitten), and Alfred the turtle.

Finding the light

What I look for in a good scene are 3 things:

  1. where my natural light is coming from
  2. what background/foreground I like - with minimal things to move
  3. posing - what to sit/lean on as far as furniture goes

They have a huge wall of windows in their living room that I loved and chose...
